Brushing with Braces

  • Here is a video we like from the American Association of Orthodontists about brushing with braces. Even though we educate our patients individually on how to care for their teeth, this video does a great job and can act as a friendly reminder on the best methods of brushing with braces. It is also a great tool to show your kids to keep them motivated to do a good job brushing!
  • It’s recommended that you brush 3 times a day and 3-4 minutes per session. We understand that is probably a big increase but it is worth it to help avoid cavities which can slow down your treatment. Here are some additional tips to help keep your happy smile a healthy one:
  • Electronic or Power Toothbrush: Electronic toothbrushes should be a must for everyone with or without braces. The motion of the spinning toothbrush is much more effective at removing plaque and bacteria than an ordinary toothbrush.
  • Waterpik: This cool gadget sprays a thin stream of water to remove plaque and food debris in between braces and teeth. It’s good at reaching places that your toothbrush can’t.
  • Interproximal Brushes: This is a small toothbrush that we will provide you free of charge. If you’ve lost your brush or need another, please just let us know and we’d be happy to give you another! You can also find them at your local pharmacy or online here.
  • Fluoridated Toothpaste and Mouthwash: Fluoride fights cavities. Check your favorite toothpaste to make sure it has fluoride in it and try adding a good fluoride rinse to your cleaning regimen if you don’t already use one (we recommend ACT mouthwash).
