Traditional metal braces offer superior durability and are often considered the standard for orthodontic treatment.
Today, modern metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever. Many adolescent patients prefer these types of braces and even look forward to changing the colors at each visit. You can pick your school colors or the colors of your favorite team and even update colors for seasons and holidays!
How Do Metal Braces Work?
Braces work by applying gentle, continuous force to move teeth into position. Although it takes time, there is a lot going on behind the scenes. Cells within your mouth are activated to undergo healthy bone turnover. This allows your teeth to gently and gradually move to a new position in the bone.

What Happens at My Appointments After I Get Metal Braces?
At each appointment, new wires are placed into the metal brackets. These wires are specifically designed to create the forces needed to move teeth into their proper positions.
Every six weeks or so, your braces will be adjusted. This is also known as tightening, although no actual tightening occurs.
What happens instead is that the previous wire is removed and a new, slightly stronger wire put in its place. The wires are held in place by colored ties, which can be switched out each time you visit. Choose your favorite color, show off your school spirit, or choose a set of colors for upcoming holidays!
